Heating With Oil

By Craig Daniels

Heating With Oil - The Reliable Energy

Among various methods of maintaining safe and comfortable heating for homes and businesses, heating with oil remains a good choice. By definition, home heating oil is a liquid petroleum product and a distillate. One prerequisite for heating with oil is a storage tank. Depending upon the size of the oil heating installation, the oil storage tank may be above ground; or, it may be installed underground. Generally, for residential purposes the oil storage tank is located above ground.

Know Your Heating Equipment

The type of manufactured heating equipment for heating with oil is either a boiler or forced air furnace. It's necessary to know the efficiency rating of the heating equipment to exact a maximum value. Technology has changed with regard to boilers and forced air furnaces. Most can offer an efficiency from 85% up to 98%. Older furnaces and boilers tend to experience reductions in efficiency as they age. Maintaining heating equipment is crucial to maximizing the expected efficiencies.

Heating With Oil - The Basic Process

The actual process of heating with oil is simple. From the storage tank, oil is carried into a pump where it goes through a pressurizing stage. From this point, it is filtered. The type of filter depends specifically on the heating equipment. The oil adopts a spray pattern that can be ignited by transformers and with additional electrical voltage, these oil droplets become sparks retained in the combustion chamber where the flame is contained. Then, flue gases transfer to the heat exchanger and pass onward into the chimney. The furnace's fan circulates the heated air in the heat exchanger. Colder air is returned to the furnace through a "return" where it will be reheated for recirculation.

The process for heating with hot water is another means of heating with oil. In this case, the boiler is fueled by oil that heats the hot water. This is piped through tubes mounted inside baseboards located along the walls of a home or business.

Clean, Comfortable Heating With Oil

One of the hallmarks of heating with oil is that there is no dust particles as with natural gas forced air heating. Oil heating is distributed evenly throughout the home. All emissions are vented through to the chimney. So, there is no worry about gas odors. Heating with oil is also beneficial to those with allergic reactions or who have sensitivities to dry air. Most oil heating systems have an average life span of approximately 20 years with good maintenance.

Cost Comparisons of Heating With Oil

The cost of heating with oil varies with price fluctuations. It is far less expensive than electric heating and ranks competitively with natural gas heat. Oil fuel for delivery is available in most localities. It's also a good idea to check the tax credits available for heating with oil that help reduce costs.

Heating With Oil - Other Considerations

While heating with oil is a clean energy alternative, there are certain environmental issues that should be considered. This is usually related to the oil storage tank, incidental delivery spills that can enter a nearby water stream or the rupture of an above ground or underground oil tank. Oil storage tanks may be registered by the oil provider with state environmental regulatory agency or the local municipality to insure community safety.

I have had oil hear on many of my homes in the past. I remember one year when funds were really tight and we didn't have the money for a minimum delivery. Had to buy #2 diesel fuel and fill it ourselves with 5 gallon cans.

I am getting spoiled with natural gas as it requires no delivery or tank.

If I had my choice it would be a wood stove in a cabin in the mountains. An axe, vuck saw and some splitting wedges and i would be a happy camper cleaning out the deadwood making room for the new.

I'm with you when it comes to the cabin in the mountains, thanks for stopping by to read the article.

When I was a youngster (a long time ago!!) We had an oil heater in the kitchen. It whoomed and whooomed and scared me so bad that I had nightmares about it blowing up. Of course, it was explained to me that it was just the air coming down the chimney .. but that doesn't matter .. I would never have an oil heater, ever!!! We have natural gas and love it!

Ahhh, the cabin in the woods sounds lovely, if hubby gets the wood. ;)
