Home Air Conditioning
By Craig Daniels
Air Conditioning For The Home Creating A Climate-controlled Home Environment Central heating is a necessity in certain climates just as air conditioning is in others. There are three types of air conditioning units: central air which controls temperatures on a "whole house" basis from a single unit, window air conditioners and portable air conditioners, a new addition for home cooling. Air Conditioning Choices Before purchasing home cooling units, determine the size of the area to be cooled. Other issues for consideration prior to purchase are: . Type of air conditioning best suited for individual needs . Cost and size of units to be installed Air conditioning a home needn't be excessive in cost if pre-planning is thorough and comprehensive. The Humidity Factor Types of heat that necessitate cooling a home may be dry, or heat with high levels of humidity that make activities inside a home uncomfortable. Dry heat in arid climates usually means longer use of air conditioning units, although at fairly stable indoor temperatures that cool at sundown. High levels of humidity require a dehumidifier in addition to air conditioning to reduce strain on units that cause deterioration. Unlike dry heat, humidity remains constant and warrants continuous use of air conditioning units which resulting in higher operational costs. Ultimately, 40 to 60% humidity is within the comfort zone for humans in enclosed areas. How Air Conditioning Unit Sizes Are Determined Air conditioning units are sold according to "btu", that is, British Thermal Units that determine the amount of energy needed to heat water to a single degree of Fahrenheit. With regard to an air conditioner which removes heat, btu per hour (btu/h) is a standard measurement that classifies the size of the unit. For example, a one ton central air conditioning unit is equal to 12,000 btu/h. This gives an idea of how to size an air conditioner to cool a room or entire home. In smaller homes less than 2,000 square feet, depending on usage, two 18,000 btu window air conditioners would adequately keep the entire home cool under normal conditions. Another factor is where use is needed. If certain rooms are regularly vacant, a window air conditioner is a better choice from the perspective of energy costs and consumption. In large areas that are fully occupied at all times, central air conditioning may be needed. Costs Of Air Conditioning Size also plays a role in the cost of installation of air conditioning. Window air conditioners are the least costly to install unless there are unusual variables in window configurations. Window air conditioners from 8,000 btu/hr to 18,000 btu/hr range in price from $200 to $600, depending on availability and brand. Central air conditioning is more costly to install and depends on the size of the area. Prices for central air conditioning units range from $2500 installed for a 36,000 btu/hr unit and higher for larger units. The best resource for advice on air conditioning equipment and cost for larger homes and buildings is a commercial HVAC company. Environmental Impact Of Air Conditioning Air conditioning units operate on allowable ,rated, refrigeration standards for HCFCs (hydro-chlorofluorocarbons), referred to as "freon". The overall environmental impact of use of air conditioning is related to controlling HCFCs, identified as a cause of greenhouse gases. Inevitably, air conditioning useage will increase as a result of global warming. |
