Hosting on The Internet

By Craig Daniels

Hosting on the Internet

Hosting a web page is the next step to developing an online presence once you have determined what to name your site. You can choose either shared or dedicated hosting. In a shared hosting plan your information resides on a computer that is also being used to host other web sites. This option is less expensive as you don’t require a specialized unit for your personal use. The down side is that there is a potential, albeit unlikely, for other users to access your data without your permission.

A dedicated host is one that is being used strictly for your information. The machine is set aside completely for your company’s use, and that significantly reduces the risk of infiltration. It does raise costs significantly, as a large chunk of hardware has been removed from general usage to serve you alone. Dedicated host servers are also likely to have better support behind the scenes.

IP addresses can also be dedicated or shared. When several pages share an IP address the user arrives at a general page and then chooses where to proceed. The dedicated IP address will always arrive at the same location each time, regardless of the entry format of the user. If your business needs to maintain secure transactions this is the preferred option.

Hosting companies provide many options for those entering cyberspace. For shared hosting of small sites you will likely do fine with a plan of $5-10 per month. Basic web pages and designs can be hosted easily through such low end plans. If you are searching to present a truly unique web site the rates are considerably more. It isn’t unusual to pay $80 a month for very basic dedicated servers hosting your web space, and prices climb rapidly if you want to have control over the appearance of error messages, sub pages and multiple compatibilities with common programs. Space also comes at a premium, the bigger the dedicated host, the more you will pay.

When choosing a web host it is just as critical to investigate the company itself as it is to evaluate their ability to meet your needs financially. Taking the time to investigate a company through the Better Business Bureau, online reviews and word of mouth may be one of the most important steps in the whole process. You don’t want to find yourself committed to a long term, expensive contract only to find out that the host is unreliable or unresponsive.

Inquire as to the speed of downloads, the size of the facility, what kind of customer service is provided and when. Read any contract you plan to sign carefully. It can really pay to stick to the larger host sites like Monster Hosting if you are just starting out, since their size allows them to offer decent services even to their smaller customers. Free hosts do exist but you will pay for the bargain by having advertising on your site; which really doesn’t look professional.

If, after you have checked out the business credentials and the services available, you feel that the price is right, go ahead and sign up. Start out with the smallest amount of space that is reasonable for your business with a little room to grow, you can always acquire additional features and space as the need arises.
